FAQs

What Is Afrobeat Music?

Afrobeat music is a recognisable genre of music that marries aspects of American jazz, salsa, funk, and soul, with traditional West African styles such as Highlife and Fuji.

The genre of music gained mass popularity in the 1970s, following the release of Afrobeat vinyl by Nigerian musician and political activist, Fela Kuti.

This style of music is highly political and is often performed in Pidgin English - a language, based on English, that is largely spoken in Nigeria.

Afrobeat vinyl brought this style of music to the west where it heavily influenced an entirely new style of music, Afrobeats. This new genre originated in the 1990s and is upbeat and has noticeably heavy percussion.

Although the influence of Afrobeat vinyl can be seen in this newer genre, they are not quite the same.

Where Did It Originate From?

Afrobeat music is a distinctive style of music that has roots in 1920s, Ghana. There, musicians took inspiration from elements of foreign swing-style, jazz music, which was popular at the time. One can also see an unmistakable hint of Afro-Caribbean Calypso music too.

The Afrobeat style that we know today is credited to musical genius, Fela Kuti. Inspired by post-colonial African politics and the Black Power movement, Fela took the genre to new heights and created a social commentary using his music.

Therefore, he is believed to be one of the founding fathers of Afrobeat music, popularising the style throughout African countries.
